PARTS OF SPEECH

All English words can be divided into different classes on the basis of their use and functions they perform. These different classes of words are called Parts of Speech.

NOUN

is a word used as the name of a person, place or thing.

Alexander was a great king.
Toronto is the capital of Canada.
Mars is a red planet.

PRONOUN

is a word used instead of a noun

Susan was late because she missed the bus.
India is a beautiful country but it is densely populated.
Chocolates are made in bulk but they are sold as bars in the market.

VERB

is a word used to express an action or a state of being

Charlie Chaplin was a famous film star.
I saw the children swimming in the pool.
New York is a big city.

ADVERB

is a word used to add something to the meaning of a verb, or another adverb or an adjective.

The plane landed smoothly on the run way.
He finished the work quite efficiently.
Rose is a very beautiful flower.

ADJECTIVE

A word used to add something to the meaning of a noun.

She is a courageous girl.
There are twenty horses in the stable.
There is a big restaurant near my house.

PREPOSITION

is a word used with a noun or pronoun to show how the person or a thing denoted by the noun or pronoun stands in relation with something else.

The Cat is sleeping under the tree.
She placed the vase on the table.
Boy is fond of music.

CONJUNCTION

is a word used to join words or sentences

John, and Susan are first cousins.
Sam worked hard yet he failed in the Exam.
He did not attend the party because it was raining.

INTERJECTION

is a word which express sudden feelings.

Hurray! We won the match.
Alas! I lost my dog in the accident
Oh! What a lovely painting.

DEFINITE ARTICLE
'THE'

'The' specifies a particular thing, place or person which we refer to

The Sun revolves round the Earth.
The eggs are in the refrigerator.
The video camera is kept in the first drawer of the cupboard.
